As a new mom, I quickly learned that having the right breastfeeding must haves on hand made all the difference. Breastfeeding is beautiful—but let’s be honest, it’s also hard work. Whether you’re exclusively nursing, pumping, or combo feeding, having the right tools can make a world of difference. As a first-time mom, I had no idea how many products I’d end up relying on. So, I’ve rounded up the absolute must-haves that helped me stay (somewhat) sane and supported during my breastfeeding journey.

1. A Reliable Breast Pump
Whether you’re going back to work or just want your partner to help with feedings, a solid pump is a lifesaver. I personally switch between two pumps: a hospital-grade one for when I’m home, and a portable pump (like the Elvie or Momcozy) that lets me move around the house or pump on the go. Having options made a huge difference for me, especially during busy days.
My picks: Hands-Free Wearable Momcozy M5 & Spectra S2
Tip: If you haven’t yet, check if your insurance covers one!
2. Nipple Balm That Actually Works
Those first few weeks? Ouch. Cracked, sore nipples are real—and a good balm helps so much.
My favorite: Earth Mama Nipple Butter
Tip: Apply after each feed for max relief. Also, if you have coconut oil at home you can use that in place of getting a nipple butter!
3. Comfy Nursing Bras
You’ll be wearing these day and night, so make sure they’re soft and easy to unclip.
Top recs: Amazon Maternity Bras
Tip: Get at least 3—one to wear, one to wash, one as backup.
4. Breastfeeding Pillow
Helps with positioning, especially in those early learning days. Also great to rest your arm on while you’re breastfeeding.
I used: Boppy
Bonus: Also great for propping baby up later!
5. Haakaa or Silicone Milk Catcher
Don’t let that letdown go to waste!
Why I love it: Haakaa
Helps to catch milk from the opposite side while feeding—every drop counts. And it’s an easy way to start a mini freezer stash!
6. Nursing pads
Leaking is totally normal, but wet shirts? Not cute.
My go-to: Disposable Nursing Pads
Pro tip: Stash extras in your diaper bag and car.
7. Pump Cleaning Essentials for Breastfeeding Moms
Washing pump parts all day gets old fast.
Lifesavers: Sterilizer Bags, Bottle Washer/Dryer/Sterilizer, or Breast Pump Wipes
These saved me time and stress—especially on busy days. The breast pump wipes are perfect when you’re pumping multiple times throughout the day. You can use them to wipe your pumps and then place your pumps in the fridge until the next use (refrigerator method). You can also wash your breast pump parts and bottles by hand at the end of the day or invest in a bottle/pump parts washer and dryer like I did. It helped to free me from the horror of constantly washing pump parts and bottles!
8. A Large Water Bottle
You’ll be thirsty all the time while nursing—stay hydrated!
My fav: a bottle with a straw
Hydration = milk production.
9. Electrolytes
Hydration is key while breastfeeding, and sometimes water alone doesn’t cut it.
Why it matters: Replacing lost electrolytes can help with energy, milk production, and overall wellness.
My picks: Liquid I.V.
Tip: Keep a few packets in your diaper bag for on-the-go hydration boosts.
